A Santa Fe 1990s Rainbow Consist
Author: MartyBernard

Santa Fe power consists in the 1990 were often quite interesting. Here's one.

1. I caught AT&SF GP40X 3804 leading in Denair, CA, which is down in the San Joaquin Valley south of Modesto, the afternoon of August 8, 1991. Close inspection of the photo shows 3 Santa Fe units and 2 Union Pacific. The GP40X would become BNSF 3034 in May 1998.

2. Here is the same train later in Stockton, CA having dropped the UP units in the yard a mile or so behind it.

3. One of the interesting units was ATSF 5265, a SDF40-2 that went to BNSF as 6975 in Feb. 1998 and was retired in May 2002.

4. Even more interesting was ATSF 96, an FP45 which was wrecked in Cajon Pass in Dec. 1994. Of the 9 AT&SF FP45s, only 91, 94, and 96 are not preserved.

5. That's San Joaquin 709 in the station.

Enjoy,

Nice Photos.

But, there never was a "94", as ATSF 5944 was wrecked and scrapped in 1981. Also, ATSF 91 is not preserved, as she was sold to Wisconsin Central in 1995, and then to LTE and scrapped in 2005.

6 out of 9 is pretty amazing. The one at IRM is near being operable last I heard and the one at OERM has been operable since they received it but is undergoing a total restoration and will run again. So 100, 102, 103, 105, 107, and 108 survive. I once counted how many different numbers they have carried and how many paint schemes they have worn, and it is also amazing. The one at OERM (pictured), original number 108, is my favorite since because I have been up in her while volunteering at the museum.

#92 at IRM underwent load testing for its new prime mover at NRE in Silvis this week. They're still raising money to get the correct trucks underneath her

And eljay you'll be able to ride her again at OERM if you donate a few hundred dollars! Marty (-:
