ARR 3005 at Matanuska Junction in August of 1984

ARR 3005 is on the south end of a gravel train working up the Palmer Branch in August of 1984.

The hot air balloons in the background are part of the ongoing Alaska State Fair.

Cool shot. I worked one of these just yesterday. Of course, we use two SD70MACs now instead of geeps. The ruling grade on the Palmer Branch is 1.4%. It's quite interesting coming down the hill on one of these heavy trains.
