Crossing the Mississippi at New Orleans.

Climbing the East approach on the Rear of Amtrak #1.
Tracks are New Orleans Public Belt. Summer 1989.
(Rich Forest video).And the decent.

There is nothing like driving over the bridge whose lanes are barely wide enough to pass a truck by you when you are two-blocked against that flimsy railing in your lane to the right, 140 feet over the river....and a train on the bridge shaking it. The Goethals Bridge in NJ can be equally thrilling except the trucks on that bridge travel at near-warp speed....

What is the grade on the approaches to the bridge?

Road lanes on the Huey Long were rebuilt several years ago. Used to be two nine-foot lanes with no shoulders... white knuckle conditions. Now there are three eleven-foot lanes with shoulders on both sides. That's not to say it ain't thrilling still, but nothing like it was.

That's more bridge than river. How long is it anyway ?
