Nostalgia & History > Conrail Memories at New Market Pond NJDate: 02/13/18 08:37 Conrail Memories at New Market Pond NJ Author: sig292 Here are a few scans of slides I took of Conrail trains along New Market Pond in Piscataway New Jersey. This is the Ex-Lehigh Valley RR, CR's Lehigh Line at Mile post 29.
1. CR B23-7#2009/GP-10#7579/GP38-2#8133/GP-40#3223 power train OIAL (Oak Island, Newark NJ-Allentown PA). 1-26-85. 2. CR SD40-2s#6293/6314 power train SEPY-6 (Selkirk NY-Potomac Yard VA). 6-6-84. 3. CR SD40-2 6453 SD-40#6329 leads train OIAL. 10-12-85. Date: 02/13/18 08:49 Re: Conrail Memories at New Market Pond NJ Author: sig292 4. CR SD40-2 leads train SEPY seen from the Washington Avenue bridge. 1-22-86.
5. For those familiar with the New Market Pond area as it is now may find this photo of interest. This is how the New Market Road crossing looked in 1985. Just about everything in this scene is gone. The red building, the siding track the train is on, even the road bridge over the pond has been replaced. Everything changed when Piscataway Township created a park here. Now there is a parking lot and gazebo here making for a very nice park, but there is no longer any good views of the passing trains. Trees along the bank of the pond have been allowed to grow unchecked for many years now. CR U23B #2786 takes tank cars to the Ziegler chemical plant on a long gone siding that was once part of LVRR's Dismal Brook Branch. 11-8-85. Enjoy, Ken Gear Edited 2 time(s). Posted from iPhone Date: 02/13/18 19:25 Re: Conrail Memories at New Market Pond NJ Author: Krokodil Thanks for your pictures, used to spend quite a few lunch hours watching the local switching tank cars (I believe with asphalt) into the chemical plant, and of course the through traffic as well, the line was double tracked again around 2008. The lead lover the road had a scary looking drop after the road crossing. But with two cars to spot and two engines, the lead engine had to bite the bullet and go down the track.amazingly, it made it back up without derailing!
