Nostalgia & History > MOW Monday: Heavyweights still in service

I haven’t seen anybody do a “Maintenance of Way Monday” before, so here are a couple of offerings: The color of silver was pretty much standard for Santa Fe M.O.W. equipment. In the early 1980s (maybe earlier??) the letters “MW” started showing up behind the car number on many of these cars.

1. AT&SF 196806 sits in front of the Amtrak depot/Eastern Division HQ building in Emporia, KS. Lettering: “DO NOT HUMP, RIDE TO REST” on the end vestibule, “LT WY 139000 CY 1268”, “RECREATION SLEEPING CAR” & a larger “WK” in 3 spots along the side.

2. AT&SF 194424 sits in the westbound yard in Emporia, KS. “LT WT” tonnage lettering & date at left end of the car were not discernable.

As a youngster and young railroader.It took me a
very long time for me to find out what this meant.

I think just about all "youngsters" just hiring out on the RR could use that same excuse. There sure is a lot of terminology around the RR that takes a while to learn! And I swear, for every one of those oddball RR terms there has to be a dozen funny stories to go with it...
