It was led by C&S SD9 #837, followed by an ABBA set of Grande F's and another C&S SD9 heading north through Highland, CO.

The long hood behind the cab is lower than the short hood. I think EMD was using the same long hood design on SD9s and SD24s at that time. SD24s needed that depressed long hood for air-tanks and the SD9s did not.
Not a profound observation but just a random thought about old SDs on a slow Friday morning . . . And the picture is great! John Date: 03/09/18 10:02 Re: BB: C&S train w/D&RGW ABBA F's 1971 Author: tbraun The "hammerhead" look is due to EMD standardizing the cab and short hood parts between the SD and GP lines. SD7 and early SD9 units have unique cab and short hood assemblies which are shorter to account for the extra height of the SD frame with the access doors along the side. Late SD9, SD18 and SD24 units use standard GP style cabs and short hoods, which stand higher than the long hood. On the SD24 units equipped with larger fuel tanks (all SD24s built except Kennecott's oddball single unit) the roof of the long hood behind the cab became a handy place to put the air tanks, making the height difference look purposeful.
