BB heads east: still electric, but the 20th Century Limited?
Author: valmont

Bruce Black took this shot on Mar. 19, 1966 @ Hastings-on Hudson, NY and labeled it '20th Century Ltd' .... weather didn't cooperate while he was back there as I have several more shots she took and lighting was the same as this in almost all of them.

Bet he was missing 'Big Sky Country'!

For a bad weather photo, this is great for both the subject matter and quality of the image.

Wonderful photo. Nice to see.

Checking with aerial views, I believe this is the eastbound Century, which would be at approximately 8:30 a.m., give or take. The industrial side of Hastings-on-Hudson was between the track and the river, and there's a gentle right-hand curve south/east of Hastings-on-Hudson station. Street View shows 1 water tower remaining, but everything else is falling to waterfront transit-oriented development. Here's the street view https://goo.gl/maps/hw42PxibJG42 and you can zoom out to see the curve south of this location. I believe the overpass in the background of the photo is the Hastings station pedestrian overpass. Might also be the W Main St overpass.

The Century still has its Railway Post Office car and a bag/lounge. The front end of the train was stainless-steel coaches by this time, while the rear was still the post-war gray Pullman cars.

I totally concur, Bob! Weather be damned: I'll give this an A+ not only because of historic value, but also because of subject & composition.

Hey Vince, can you come up with a road # for that motor?? I's sure like to swipe a copy for my NYC file. Either way, thanks for posting another Bruce classic...

Lance:

I zoomed in as much as I could but it was still fuzzy, however the last number could be a '2'. Best I can do is what's noted on the mount: 'eng no. 23' I think these motors had #'s in the 220,230 and 240 series, but Bruce didn't get the third number.

Those “P’s” and “T’s” are my favorite electric motive power. Dunno why, they’re kinda ugly, but purely utilitarian...

EP-5’s are my second favorite...

There was no overhead wire...it was all third rail electric power.

One of Howard Fogg's very early watercolor paintings was of this train with this type of power, along the Hudson. When I saw the picture, I, too, thought it a little less than handsome !
