Thanks ! --Kelly Date: 05/16/18 19:44 Re: EL Griffith and Hammond In. 1971 Author: cabsignaldrop I bet that sounded great clattering over those diamonds!

I was actually at Griffith several times in late 2016 and early 2017 which is how I recognized the location. The Erie Lackawanna/C&O tracks are gone, replaced with a bike/ped trail. Also, the Michigan Central line that was parallel to the EJ&E has been removed. The EJ&E and GTW are now both CN (both still double track). Several new connections have been built to expedite moving trains between the two remaining main lines. And the tower was moved to a new location in a small park north of the tracks. Still an interesting location but nothing like it was when these pics were taken. niagara484 Date: 05/18/18 07:18 Re: EL Griffith and Hammond In. 1971 Author: Roadjob Love the EL images! This was a great spot to watch trains. You could see EL, GTW, EJ&E, and Chessie/C&O. Always busy. I believe EL is a bike path now.

It's interesting that a connecting track from Hartsdale Yard to the EJ&E was relaid several years ago. Those would be the tracks running to the west of the diamond. I don't recall which RR the track had originally connected with, but the tracks had been taken up. For a time it was served by some ex-PRR trackage from the other side of the yard. A pipe coating company located next to the yard and must have been generating decent business for the railroads. The PRR line from Logansport ran past the yard. I lived in Schererville as a young boy (1953-55) and still remember the mail sacks hanging by the station. |
