Chessie on Sand Patch...top and bottom
Author: Roadjob

First series is at Sand Patch summit. Great place to hang out for a day. Many good photographic opportunities as the Sun shifted. There was always SA tower to let you know what to expect next.

top. helper is about to enter Sand Patch tunnel in its way back to Hyndman

middle...work train plodding along westbound

bottom...helpers have just cut away from westbound, as eastbound is still going over the top

At the bottom of Sand Patch east slope was Hyndman. There was Q tower and the helper station to keep you occupied.

top...eastbound passing Q tower. Helper facility in distance

middle..helper station at Hyndman. In late 70s 2 sets of 2 SDs were the weapon of choice.

bottom...abundantly powered westbound is getting a run at the hill

Thanks for sharing this fantastic "six pack." All your shots are excellent, but the third is my favorite.

Photo #3 is excellent. Lots of drama going on here; I can hear the sounds and feel the ground shake. I count five cabooses (cabeese?). Very nice!

Awesome assortment! Shot #4 shows 3 sets of helpers at Hyndman. Wow! Were the ore trains running at this time? That's the only time that I remember seeing more than 2 helper sets there! Great photos!

Nice photo's. From someone who grew up out west, why is it called the sand patch? Cause they had to sand the rails to get up the hill?

Cheers, Jim

Not "the sand patch". Just "Sand Patch". As though it's a geographic placename. (It is.)

Train in no. 4 is an eastbound freight, just happens to have one of the 7600's on the front. Ore trains were still running but were becoming increasingly rare as the rust belt rusted.
