Nostalgia & History > A Couple Questions About #1Date: 05/23/18 02:00 A Couple Questions About #1 Author: refarkas It is April 1973 most likely in Iowa, and this ex-GTW switcher is on C&NW property. Its original number can not be distinguished, but a large "1" has been painted on the cab. Most likely this has been purchased by the C&NW.
1.) Does anyone have more information on number 1? 2.) Is this either Oelwein or Marshalltown? Bob Date: 05/23/18 05:52 Re: A Couple Questions About #1 Author: GPutz From the C&NW roster on utarails.net:
b. C&NW 1004 (2nd) shown in C&NW records as ex-Grand Trunk Western 1. The original unit, GTW 7909, had its road number painted out prior to its sale, and movement, to Precision National, displaying GTW 1 as its road number while in transit to Precision National, and later sale to C&NW. This was for transportation convenience only as AAR and FRA interchange rules require a road number on any locomotive for movement in interchange. Precision National has done this many times on many locomotives which it has purchased over the past 20 years, confusing roster keepers with several new "No. 1" locomotives for various railroads that sell their locomotives to Precision. The scene just has so much history in it. ALLEN Date: 05/23/18 07:52 Re: A Couple Questions About #1 Author: refarkas Thanks for the background information on this locomotive.
Bob Date: 05/23/18 08:21 Re: A Couple Questions About #1 Author: ntharalson Looks to be somewhere in Des Moines, although I don't recognize the background
buildings. I'm thinking it's north of the Spine Line crossing at an old CGW facility, but I'm not really familiar enough with Des Moines to pin point it. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA |
