Some Milwaukee Road GP9s
Author: MartyBernard

1. MILW GP9 206 was transferring a passenger car at Randolph St. (just north of Chicago Union Station) on December 14, 1972. That's the Lake Street EL structure at the top of the picture. Note the geep's steam generator venting. She was built in June 1954.

2. Doing the Hookie Pookie at Rondout, IL. MILW GP9 297 on June 24, 1977. She was built in May 1959.

3. MILW 304(GP9), 84A(F7A), and 322(GP9) on June 20, 1964 at St. Paul, MN.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

Great photos of a venerable old breed of locomotive. I especially like your second photo with the section crew waiting for the train to depart so they can get back to oiling and adjusting the switch they are looking at.

I always liked the Milwaukee's GP9s. Just something about their look. My favorite were the 280-331 - the last order that had dynamic brakes (although I think there were 10 others that also had dynamics).

Thanks for posting them Marty.

The passenger car appears to be one of the ex-Northern Pacific baggage cars that were being used on Amtrak's Empire Builder at the time.

Built from parts of traded-in FT's, IIRC.

My dad, brother and I got a cab ride in Milwaukee # 206, from Chicago Union station to Northbrook, Illinois. It was pulling a commuter train sometime around 1958. I remember it got pretty cozzy in that cab, with the two man crew, and the three of us. The train stopped at at least eight stations, and we had to stand for the whole 18 miles home. It was fun, but I was already pooped from walking all around downtown Chicago, and a tour of the Natural History Museum, where my dad worked. As we passed Tower A-20 at Techny, Ill. I was excited to be almost home.

I'd sure like to do that again sometime.
