Need Location of UP Service Facilities
Author: edsaalig

Photo taken in August of 1954, east Los Angeles, but where in relations to the UP service yard? Were only GP units serviced here?

According to a map in our UPHS Streamliner, I believe the service tracks were south of the yard between Washington Boulevard and the Long Beach Freeway.

The maintenance crews must have roasted in the Los Angeles summer sun!

Actually, downtown LA and East LA don't get that hot because they're on the coastal plain and they usually get a sea breeze.

During that time the South Central District freight trains were handled by seemingly nothing but GP9s. AsI recall the SD24s didn’t begin to show up until the 60s.

This is the same facility after they put a roof over it. It's still being used today. As for not getting hot weather in L.A., it gets plenty hot, especially when the Santa Ana winds blow with temperatures well above 100.. About the only place that stays cool is at the beach and East L.A. is not anywhere close to the beach.-BMT

So, the engine service facility was located toward the lower center of the yard near the coach yard. (looking north). All power was service there. I remember when the passenger trains still ran, E units were serviced at the location where the photo of the U50 was taken.

Is this the same facility? Photo taken in the mid-70s.

Yep, that's the place. This is the west end of the ramp, the U50 shot I posted is the east end of it as is the picture you posted. The building you see in the background here was the old backshop which was torn down in the mid 70s. Here's a better shot of the ramp (as it's called) by Mike Muklin.-BMT
