Caboose Chili in Hyndman, 1991
Author: lee_uintah

The Sand Patch helper set drifts downgrade and stops in Hyndman at 1418 hours on November 9, 1991, to receive a care package of Caboose Chili from the Cabooseman, Don. The crew wants to know if they can also get cornbread! Maybe next time!

A few hours later, the new Sand Patch helper crew also wants Caboose Chili, so stops on their way through Hyndman. The Cabooseman, Don, also provides the Chili, then another brief caboose tour including the cupola, at 1646 hours on 9 November 1991.

What was the purpose of the caboose there? Did he work for CSX?

Don never worked for CSX or any other railroad, but he grew up loving trains and watching them: Early in California, then in Alexandria, VA, then lots along the B&O while living in suburban Maryland. He bought his first caboose as a "cabin" home away from home in 1991, then not too much later he added his second caboose on the same site in Hyndman. It will appear in future videos. Partly at my suggestion, after retirement, he decided to move to Flagstaff where he lived the rest of his life. He got a house right next to the Santa Fe mainline leaving town westbound climbing the grade which he dubbed "Lee's Grade." Near the top of the grade, I dubbed the sweeping curve there "Don's Curve." The Cabooseman was as good a man as you would ever hope to meet, and is fondly remembered by all.

Can't use the Don's Curve name. Already named for the curve at Lawrence, KS. upkpfan

Maybe we can posthumously change the name to Cabooseman's Curve.
