BRC's Smokin' EMD's
Author: ghemr

To be fair here's a few photo's of the BRC's EMD locomotives hard at work. The 533-534 are on a CSX Barr Yd. transfer job. They'll pull their train out of the East Departure of Clearing Yard and take the train east to Southwest Hwy. They'll cut off the locomotives, run the power around the train and tie back on. After a brake test they'll shove the train onto the B&OCT and then head south (timetable east) ten miles to Barr Yard. Although in today's railroading this may seem complicated but this move was accomplished very fast----in fact the crew would sometimes make TWO round-trips in their 12 hour tour of duty.

Both runs are South Chicago jobs. In this case the caboose is on the rear....

Must have been a show to see those switchers struggling to get trains like those rolling.

Very nice photos.
Interesting to see the GTW was double track across the Hayford diamonds in
picture 3 and single track in picture 5.  I had lost track of the time frame when
that occured but you pictures bracket the event.

Also notice a south sider railfan chase vehicle in picture 3.

For those not familiar with the area, the white building with the awnings was the Hayford "tower".

A conductor told me a story about one of those quick trips to Barr Yard.  One Saturday a crew member
wanted to attend a wedding reception.  To save time on the return trip they didn't bother running around
the caboose (they always came back lite) but elected to shove it.  They went over 95th St. so fast that
the lone 600 bottomed out quite severely and the diesel engine shut down.  The head man told the
engineer to keep rolling and went back to restart it.  Got back to Clearing in time to make the reception.
