A gray sky and the Chicago skyline is the setting for this 1948 view of a NYC train with E7A #4006 on the point. The low angle used by the photographer (unknown) adds a lot to this image and there is zero space below the E7's pilot in the shot I have .... this a re-post, but it fit nicely into my OTD series.

That's a great photo showing the LaSalle Street Station which was the home for the Rock Island, New York Central and the Nickle Plate Railroads. It was several stories tall housing the corporate offices of the Rock Island with some other offices for the NYC as well. I had a floor registry board out of the 6th floor that I donated to the Colorado Model Railroad Museum for display. On this board, which by the way was in a heavy brass frame, listed the NYC coal bureau in room 600.  Across the street was the Chicago Board of Trade and a number of Rock Island commuter crews on the "one round trippers" with change out of their Rock Island uniforms in the locker room on the second floor and don their Board of trade light blue jackets to be runners on  the floor during their layovers downtown. Then they would rush back to "uniform up" and work their trip back to Blue Island or Joliet.

Also note across the street and to the east (right) was the great map maker company, Rand McNally.
To the west of this location was the old Grand Central Station and beyond that Chicago Union Station. To the east was Dearborn Street Station and further east was Central Station.
A short distance north of Union Station was the Northwestern Station.

My first trip to Chicago was  in 1980.  I was lucky enough to get to see LaSalle St.  What a nice station....Idiots destroyed it.  I wish I had scene Grand Central..

What a great photo of a really classy locomotive and paint scheme of the great New York Central Railroad.    That paint scheme is really classy, and screams Art Deco.

Until I read your reply, I was rather surprised that you had posted a long reply to a post about an NYC locomotive.  Of course you would know a lot about your original employer -- the Rock  Thanks so much for that great info about those buildings -- and about the Rock Island conductors' second jobs as runners" in teh Stock Exchange.  A great way for them to make more money during their layover time  the Windy City!
