Nostalgia & History > Visit to Salt Lake, Garfield, & Western 1982Date: 07/21/18 00:21 Visit to Salt Lake, Garfield, & Western 1982 Author: krm152 On the afternoon of July 22, 1982, I visited the Salt Lake, Garfield, & Western’s yard in Salt lake city UT. Although the signage appeared unfriendly, the people were welcoming and gave me a ride on their ALCO S6 that was working the coal dumper. The only thing they would not permit me to do was to enter the shop building because I was not wearing safety shoes.

There would have been two different railroads to the left in that last photo. Western Pacific (headed across northern Nevada to Oakland, CA) and the Union Pacific (former Los Angeles & Salt Lake) headed to LA via Las Vegas. Today it's all UP and the tracks have been simplified a bit, but the Garfield still runs along their own trackage. In a sign of how much things have changed, I watched Utah Railway drop off a group of tank cars for the Garfield a while back. Bet no one could have predicted that in the early 80's. Nathan |
