I was reading some recent threads here and elsewhere about the 4460. None of them had any pix. So I Googled for pix of the 4460 and didn't find any. I am sure the 4460's last days on the SP were well recorded by many photographers, but I find it interesting that so few images seem to have found their way to the internet, at least that I have been able to find. I was just getting into photography when the 4460 was making its final runs, so here are a few of mine, but I bet there are a bunch of much better pix out there and I'd love to see them posted. My first is at Mission Bay roundhouse, then Burlingame, and finally a sadly blurred shot coming home on its last run. Hopefully readers can dig out more pix and post them, or perhaps point to where they are already on the internet.

Thanks for potsintg the fine photos of SP's 4460. I believe it was in October 1958, my brother and I rode behind 4460 to Fresno. The fan trip started in San Francisco. We boarded at Redwood City then crossed the bay on the Dumbarton Bridge and contnuted through Niles Canyon and over Altamont to Tracy. From Tracy the trip went south on the former West Valley Line through Los Banos to Fresno. The return trip came up the valley to Lathrop, then over to Tracy for the run back to the Bay Area via Altamont and the Dumbarton Bridge. It was a long day riding at the vestibules, but such a memorable outing. I still recall seeing the flames from the firebox reflecting off the bay waters as we crossed on the Dumbarton Bridge.

Photo #2 is outstanding and worthy of an award. It is a classic picture of "Southern Pacific in California" of the train we all want to ride, including a bit of time spent standing in the baggage car. You even included the lowered crossing gate, painted in back & white, the scheme gone now for decades. Thanks for digging this out and posting here.

Three great photos, you have nothing to apologize for! Too bad about the blur on the bridge shot, but you were probably shooting Kodachrome ASA 10.

I believe my picture at Burlingame is an August 17, 1958 Northern California Railroad Club special from SF to Monterey. The trip to Fresno was about two months later, and then the last trip to Reno.

SP GP9 5624 to 4460s right was the power for the last train to Los Gatos. That was a best of times and the worst of times for many SP railfans with the end of steam.

Here's 4464 leaving Mojave on 51, the westbound san Joaquin Daylight, at the old Oak Creek Road crossing in my much younger days...
It actually made the earth move!

I love your photos JB, plus the others tha have been added to this thread. I missed all of this by more than a few years, so I'm glad everyone has some photos to share. JB, I loved the Burlingame shot, classic Bay Area SP. But my favorite is #3 with the train on the Benicia-Martinez bridge. I have lots of memories of that bridge, but no steam trains so I really like that photo.

Bingo. Thanks. I should have thought to try searching TO but I used Google and it did not pickup the TO posts. I'm sitting here 60 years later wondering why I didn't chase the trips to Monterey or Fresno. I did chase the Reno trips in and out of the Bay Area. Probably had something to do with chasing women instead.
