Cabs As They Were Meant To Be

A few images of Conrail.
Even after the big order of wide cabs (C40's & SD60M / I's), Conrail wasn't too particular about the leader on just about any train.

This one is from Conrail's early era. The roster was still in a state of flux where they were happy to have any leader, as long as it ran.

Helper sets on the Alleghenies during Conrail were either EMD SD40's or 40-2's. The ex-EL SD45-2's however, were the stars on the mountain,

As the '45's started to age, the SD40-2's stepped in totally.
Sets would roam the Mountain in either direction keeping things fluild.
At Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, a pair of 40-2's shoves a grain train Eastbound toward the World Famous Horseshoe Curve.
Crawling alongside are coal loads that will follow the grainer down the hill.

The EMD SD50's got mixed reviews, but Conrail ran the hell out of them on any kind of train.

The last standard cab EMD's Conrail bought were the SD70's.They were to line up with the NS fleet of the same units. Even the number series lined up.
These EMD's were the big finale of standard cabs on Big Blue. Probably my favorite late Conrail purchase.
At East Palestine, Ohio, the 2570 speeds East toward Conway yard and a crew change.
