Out Date: 09/14/18 11:14 Re: Espee Depot Friday Author: WrongWayMurphy I passed through Susanville in June on the way to Train Mountain, and don’t recall any tracks there.

The trainorder signal is gone, but the tracks and the depot still stand. https://goo.gl/maps/sdSTsAxuMdo About 200 feet of rail still run from the depot across Richmond Road and almost to Lassen Street, probably left as a memorial. Was in Susanville about 2 years ago and checked it all out. I was on one of the last movements on the trackage beyond Flanigan. Out Date: 09/14/18 15:28 Re: Espee Depot Friday Author: BoilingMan I love the weird rain gutter, not quite at the bottom of the roof. The restored depot at Centerville (Fremont) CA has that same detail.
I could never figure out why SP did that. SR Date: 09/15/18 04:13 Re: Espee Depot Friday Author: millerdc BoilingMan Wrote:

Date: 09/15/18 08:36 Re: Espee Depot Friday Author: BoilingMan Mmmmmmm... no, not in Centerville, so there must have been some other reason. I’ve never taken the time to look for this detail on other older depot photos, maybe a list would be interesting. I’ll take a look this evening.
SR Simply “style”, perhaps? Date: 09/15/18 09:32 Re: Espee Depot Friday Author: TCnR That was how they did it for a while. It was either to prevent ice dams, which would happen on the roof that is not over the heated building, or possibly the downspouts, to keep them aligned with the buidling. Keep in mind the gutters and the downspouts were usually made of wood at the time.
Another possibility is to prevent snow sliding off the roof and hitting people below, but that's the whole idea of raingutters anyways. They often say they don't build houses like that anymore and there's plenty of good reasons. Date: 09/16/18 15:47 Re: Espee Depot Friday Author: upkpfan No, that is not a rain gutter. That is a device they put up to keep ice or snow from sliding on down and off the roof and maybe on to somebody. upkpfan
