thirty one years ago . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   on 11-11-87 Santa Fe's Second Watson Road Switcher, based out of Watson Yard in Wilmington, CA,  was diverted from it's normal run to Torrance over to the Harbor Belt Line RR in San Pedro, CA, to retreive a train of empty hopper cars that arrived the day before carrying copper concentrate from the Kaiser Bulk Facility there in the Port of Los Angeles, much to the chagrin of it's crew. The Harbor Belt Line RR has been gone for decades taken over by the Pacific Harbor Line. The Santa Fe has been gone for decades. This former Pacific Electric Harbor Belt Line RR line the train is on has been out of service for many years, except for a few years of service by a trolley. The fishing fleet in the background is long gone as well as the prison and Navy facilities seen across the channel on Terminal Island in the distance which is now almost exclusively container facilities. Time marches on.

Glad the crew took time for this image.  Great caption on all the changes this port location has endured.

Terminal Island Federal Correctional Institute is still very much there.
