Amtrak steak dinner circa 1976

A quick shot of a passengers steak dinner on the Sunset Limited in June 1976.
There were some pre-Amtrak chefs still working and the meals were quite good.

Compare that portion with Amtrak's "Signature Steak" that is still served today on most LDT's. It's about half the size and twice the cost. But sadly, in a few months, I fear we will be longing for the Signature Steak to reappear.

Anyone know what that steak dinner cost in 1976? How does that compare in real dollars to 2018?

And the china was the "National" pattern.  At the time that pattern seemed to be so plain compared to some of the pre-Amtrak patterns.  Now I look back fondly on it - nice and heavy china, it worked well.

$7.25 is the price.  I am scanning a 1976 menu for your perusal.  Mushroom caps on frill toothpicks,  Baked potato.  Peas in side vegetable dish.  Lemon wedge for iced tea. Dinner roll.  All looks in good order.

My scanner does not want to behave.  The menu for trains 21/22, 30/31, 63/64 & 303/304 shows the steak, as well as filet of sole, pot roast, salad bowl, waistliner, hamburger, ham n' cheese or roast beef sandwich.   Chicken with rice soup, fruit cup or tomato juice as appetizers.  Desserts applie pie, ala mode, ice cream, melon, chocolate sundae.   Enjoy your dinner!

The other long distance menus offered a few more entrees.

The inflation calculator I picked shows this as now being $32.22

Todays steak is much like a hockey puc, tough and hard to cut with the best of knives.

There is a book somewhere out there called "The Provatcitive Pen of Lucius Beebe".  I haven't seen it for many years and wish I could read it again.   He had a great description of old vs newer diner food.  He was a real piece of work.

Here is a typical Amtrak menu from 1976, that I mentioned several postings above.  It is the 21-31-63-303 menu.

Amtrak does not charge enough for their meals and haven't for a long time.

There's a factor called price elasticity of demand. In most cases, as price increases, demand decreases. Sure, Amtrak could double its onboard food prices, but then even fewer passengers would use the diner. It's a cost problem not a revenue problem.

I have been to some of the meetings, you wouldn't believe what the mark up is on some items!
