What is it, UP 2584?
Author: lilwes

Came across this photo of UP 2584.  Upon a closer I noticed it looked like a normally aspirated GP-40.  I took the photo on 5/18/2008 in Topeka, Ks. Anyone out there have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for all help, Wes.

De-turboed GP40, probably 2000 hp.

A former Rio Grande, originally a PC, later CR, GP40 rebuilt into a GP38-2 by MPI in 1998.

UP 2584, built September 1968 as PC #3160. To Conrail as its #3160, then to Rio Grande originally as #3160, then re# to 3148. Then rebuilt to a GP38-2 by MPI 1998. Became HLCX #1085 in 2009.

A normally aspirated GP40 could only exist as a GP38. The guys for the 40 have been removed.

Did she keep all 3 cooling fans, or is that a box of some kind where fan 3 was removed?  Most of these ended up with only two fans, with inconsistant spacing so.  The CORP 2065 (IIRC) is missing the middle fan.
