Definitely the real "400".  This is train 401 soon to be headed to Minneapolis.  According to
Jim Scribbins in his "The '400' Story",  " Graceful built-in markers were applied to the rear
of observations 7200 and 7201 and to the forward end of cars 7500 and 7501, the baggage-
tavern-counter lounges.  The electric lamps on these cars were necessary because at St. Paul
Union Depot, the diesels would run around the train, eliminating the need for wyeing..... An
incidental benefit of this procedure was the elimination of a switching move in Minneapolis
to line the train for its return trip to Chicago." ("400" Story, page 56)

Nice shot:  Bottom shot, old C&NW RR train and engine crews based in Adam, WI and worked to and from Minneapolis, MN.

The #1742 in the first shot really brings back good memories for me. We got a cab ride in that very  engine back around 1970 when it was assigned to the wayfreight. I still got the tape recording of that ride while it was switching local industry one day in my hometown. The ironic thing is that I was only 12 years old at the time, but would actually go on to fire under that very engineer one day some 11 years in the future. Who would have known back then!

Assuming that the train in pics #1 and 2 is eastbound, it looks like meat train #126 from Huron, South Dakota via Belle Plaine, Iowa.
