Train Order(s) question.
Author: 4489

The thread on Train Orders a few lines down got me thinking.

How were T. O.'s numbered.  Was this a consecutive number for the year, month etc?

Been very curious about this.

Thanks and all of the best for 2019 to all.

Each dispatcher district in an office had a unique series of numbers (e.g., 1-99, 100-199, 200-299). The sequence started at the beginning (e.g. 1, 100, 200) at midnight each day.

To keep from having to re-issue every slow order every night, many railroads had a separate series of numbers for each dispatcher district that would be issued consecutively (e.g., 900-999) until they ran out (e.g., 999) after which the sequence would start over. Generally, if the slows were still in effect in 30 days after being issued, they would be re-transmitted using a new number and the original would be annulled.

We (MoPac) normally didn't renumber a slow order until we started a new train order book.  From my experience copying orders on the Rock Island, they were the same way.

Adding to TAW's always fine comments - the Rock Island's Memphis line was busy enough that they would use two series of numbers for movement orders to avoid duplicating the same numbers for movement orders on the same date.   Here's order No 13 and order No 107 for Dec 15, 1971.   Some dispatchers would skip using order No 13.
