Nostalgia & History > Friday Flashback: "Crosstown Transfer"Date: 01/04/19 20:48 Friday Flashback: "Crosstown Transfer" Author: aussiehinz It's a warm June 22, 1977 afternoon as Soo Line SD40 #753 brings a Schiller Park (SOO) to Barr Yard (B&O) transfer through the busy junction at Brighton Park, on Chicago's southwest side. All trains were required to make a complete stop at Brighton Park, and then be governed by the manually operated semaphore signals visible above the shack that housed the switchtender in charge of train movements at this location. The iconic non-interlocked grade crossing was finally modernized in July, 2007, just a tad over thirty years after this image was taken.

They'd make a cut at 71st St., deliver to Rockwell and then come back lite to the balance of their train. Then continue onto Barr....
