The B&O Depot burned in the late 1970’s; I made photos 4/1973. B&O tracks between New Albany and the Louisville & Indiana were Abandoned circa 2000. Thanks for your posting. ALLEN Date: 01/11/19 02:55 Re: K&IT 65 at New Albany, IN 1960 Author: jbohdan2 Kentucky and Indiana Terminal.
Date: 01/11/19 04:47 Re: K&IT 65 at New Albany, IN 1960 Author: santafe199 What a scene!!! Crossing guard at work. Mostly weed-free red brick platform. Trimmed grass. Street lamps. Neon liquor store sign. Old gas pumps. Neighborhood kids gathered...
I can close my eyes and hear one of the kids' transistor radio blaring out the play by play of a Red's or an Indian's game. Pretty soon we'll hear the ringing bells of the neighborhood ice cream peddler coming down the street. Suburban America in much simpler times... Lance/199 Edited 1 time(s). It is almost as if I turned away from the monitor for a few seconds, the scene would be slightly different. That is a rare quality to capture on film, but this imsge captures it.

I grew up in Buechel in the east end of Louisville and would occassionally see the K&IT poke its nose out there. If you have more or for that matter Southern from around the area please post!
Date: 01/11/19 10:33 Re: K&IT 65 at New Albany, IN 1960 Author: CA_Sou_MA_Agent As I recall, the Monon used to come straight off the bridge and had street running at about where the signal watchman is standing. Am I correct? Is this K&IT engine on the "Tehachapi loop"-style track arrangement that the Southern Railway trains used where they came northbound off the bridge and spiraled under themselves as they proceeded west?

is pretty close. Actually the K&IT loco is on the loop track to the Southern. The Monon line runs diagonally across the open space in front of the Cygna... sign and goes to street running a couple blocks over. Great photo. The shape of the bodywork is correct, the color looks right, and the fact that it has whitewall tires and large hubcaps (not "dog dishes" or full wheel covers) tends to identify the car, even with only a tiny section visible. For those who may be wondering what a Jeepster was, it was basically a convertible version of the Jeep station wagon of the 50s.
