This installment of OTD will be 6 photos ... I took them on Jan. 11, 1969 @ Cheyenne ... I believe this was the National Western Stock Show train that runs between Cheyenne and Denver.

Great shots at Cheyenne.
In picture 4 there are a couple buildings on the left I never saw.
I guess after Amtrak began they were torn down.

Gary,
The longer white building was the old freight house. And there were two freight house tracks to the west of it. Those are where you see the boxcars parked.
I am not sure of the exact date but that building was gone when I came here in 1976. Now in 76 the fuel risers and umbrella sheds were still there on the mainlines. Where the freight house stood was where the 3985 sat on display having been moved there a few years before. These are great depictions of the older UP specials using 8444.

Nice 'behind the scenes' look, something we don't often see when steam is running...

Amazing that they were able to couple up to the tender with people on top and hoses attached. Today, no way.

How do you know that there were people on top of the tender when the actual joint was made?

Don't think they just would have left the hose up there by itself.  There are people on top in photo 3.

Why not? It's only water.

There are people on top in

Yes, but that could possibly be after the joint was completed.

The person in pic 2 and 3 sure looks like my uncle UP Joe.

Nice job capturing all the early a.m. anticipation of a mainline steam excursion by getting up   early and beating crowd to the depot!
