A CGW F-Unit Friday from Walt Dunlap
Author: MartyBernard

Look at the star on the sign post in the first photo.  I didn't know what it was either.  I asked Walt and he said it "was a flanger warning. If you are plowing snow, and you some how see it, you hoist up the between-the-rails flange blade to avoid taking out crossing materials."

1. CGW F3A 102-C with a Clarion, IA bound 74 car freight at Hayfield, MN on October 27, 1962.

2. CGW F3A 107-A heading a southbound extra near Simpson, MN on  December 6, 1963.

3. CGW F3A 110-A (built in March 1948) at the Running Repair Shop, Oelwein, IA in August 8, 1962.

4. CGW F3A 110-C (built March 48 became CNW 208) at Hayfield on December 1, 1962.

5. CGW F3A 112-A derailed at Hayfield, MN on November 22, 1962.  This is what happens when you pick a switch with F-units.

6. CGW F7A 156 in northbound Train 92 at Hayfield, MN on September 29, 1962.

Enjoy,

Thanks for sharing. I love covered wagons. What is the star shaped sign in the first photo?

On Great Western, that's a Flanger.

Distinctive, huh?

So many cool F unit shots. I've been at that kind of derailment too. Not fun. And then the coup-de-grace on photo 6 - a hide car. You smell them before you see them! Thanks for sharing these.

I sure do enjoy these images.  All the F units and a simply paint scheme with a very nest logo.

For CGW fans, there is an excellent CGW book by Phillip Hastings that was published years ago by Carstens (I'm guessing out of print) that features plenty of terrific CGW scenes and trains, all in black and white.

Morning Sun also published an all color CGW book. I recognize some of the shots posted here in previous threads from the book. I sold my book at a premium, and I believe it is one of the better Morning Sun books. Morning Sun put an M&STL book out too that is pretty good in my opinion also.
