Walking Through the Rock Island Roster, Part 12, More E-units
Author: MartyBernard

1. CRI&P E8A 643 (I think) with the Rocky Mountain Rocket, at Rock Island, IL on August 18, 1964.  I wasn't paying attention and the train snuck up on me otherwise I would have taken a better shot.

2. CRI&P E8A 644 with the westbound Peoria Rocket at 79th St., Chicago, IL on March 31, 1964.

3. CRI&P E8A 644 at Vermont St., Blue Island, IL on June 24, 1977.  The Vermont Street Station is the terminus for the Beverly Branch commuter trains.

4. CRI&P E8A 646 running as the 2nd #1, Rocky Mountain Rocket Section at 99th St., Chicago, IL.on April 21, 1965.

5. CRI&P E8A 648 about to duck under Chicago's Roosevelt Road Viaduct with Trains #5-9 and Big Ben on the end on March 30, 1971 (more on Big Ben later).  I like this shot because you can look into the south end of the original LaSalle Station.

6.  CRI&P E8A 649 at Blue Island, IL, Vermont St., and the end of her run down the Beverly Branch on June 24, 1977.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

Great photos of the old Rock. Yes, when I worked the Quad Cities Rocket (rarely) they would have Big Ben on the tail end. I believe it was a former C&O dome. It was owned by DePorter Butterworth Tours out of Rock Island. They (Bill Butterworth) owned this car and an ex IC sleeper ( I believe the Bonnie B) and ran them on the tail end of #5 & 6 to Chicago and return. When the Cubs played early afternoon games at Wrigley the tour company would book excursions to the game with travel to and from in their cars.

Thanks for posting. Great photos as usual.

A minor correction.  The Peoria Rocket is westbound at 79th St.
Photo is looking north / east.  Signal 88 governs eastbound trains on track 3.
The Rocket is on track 4.
Tracks going underneath the Rock are BRC and C&WI.

Auburn Park depot can be seen towards the rear of the Rocket, between tracks 3 and 4.

During a few years of my youth I could see this area from my house.

I am trying to figure out where the first photo of the RMR in Rock Island
was taken.  '64 predates my time in the QC (and working for the RI), but
the topography just doesn't look like Rock Island.
I have been enjoying all of the RI pics thoough!
