The sight and sounds of GE C30-7's throttling out
Author: BrianA

With EMD's it is mainly the sounds of listening to them throttle up but with the older GE's it was just as much what you'd see as what you'd hear.  Case in point, eastbound coal loads BN VV082 leaving Edgement, SD with 5129/5091/5044/7886/5545 (C30-7/C30-7/C30-7/SD40-2/C30-7) after changing crews on 6-2-92.  I can still recall the excitment I felt listening to those beasts throttle up and the smoke from those four GE's rising straight up in unison.  Anyone else remember staying in an Alliance, NE motel and seeing the BN train schedules displayed on local TV?  It sure made railfanning easy back then!

You got it right Brian. It all began as Alco-GE and GE kept the sounds of the Alcos as I remember them on the GM&O thru my hometown while I was growing up. You could feel the heartbeat in the Alcos and later these GE's.
Thanks for the footage.

Thankfully, no bell ringing or horn blowing to step on that glorious four-cycle sound!

I'm an SD guy, but I must say those GE's sounded good throttling up!  Thanks for sharing Brian.

Yes, I remember the "call board" channel on the local TV in Alliance.  Wished they still did that.

That sounded awesome, thanks for posting. I liked the note about the TV channel with the train call board, that would be awesome to have today.
