Walking Through the Rock Island Roster, Part 14, More E-units
Author: MartyBernard

1.  During a family vacation, on July 28, 1962, I found the Golden State Limited somewhere east of Tucumcari, NM.  Its March 1968 schedule is here, http://www.streamlinerschedules.com/concourse/track9/goldstate196803.html

2. CRI&P E8A 653 and NYC SW1 617 from the Roosevelt Road Viaduct in Chicago on May 13, 1964.   I assume that 653 has the Rocky Mountain Rocket. Note Clark St. CTA bus on ramp to viaduct.

3. CRI&P E8A 653 in Blue Island, IL at the Vermont St. Station on June 24, 1977.

4 and 5. CRI&P E8A 654 (with the Twin Star Rocket) and MILW FP7 99C (with probably the Afternoon Hiawatha) at the Milwaukee Road Station in Minneapolis, MN  on June 8, 1964.

6.  CRI&P E8A 654 with Train 5, Quad Cities Rocket, at Blue Island, IL on June 24, 1977.  Beyond the end of the train you can see Illinois Central cars at the end of the Blue Island Branch.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

I agree photo number one is a great shot. That train is really kicking up a storm, enhanced by the overhead clouds, the exhaust and blur of the locomotive.  The long consist speaks of better and busier times for the Rock Island. In 1962 I suspect the service standards were pretty high on board the low altitude route.
Thank you!

I must comment that the track and roadbed looks pretty sketchy on that first shot.

Very impressive photo-really conveys a sense of speed.

All beautiful photos but man, that 3rd shot really epitomizes 1970’s railroading. Grimey beat up equipment and crappy unreliable automobiles on the side.

Wonderful shots -- All...  #2 with the Warbonnets in the background -- not familiar with Chicago, where would they be?

Lark, I was standing approximately at the red X near the top of the Google map.  I was facing south and a little east and standing on the Roosevelt Road Viaduct.  The war bonnets are about at the A at the bottom of the map.      The Amtrak engine terminal is at Y on the left of the map.

Hope this helps.

#1,2,and 4 are my picks.
#1 reminds me of the morning I saw the southbound Twin Star Rocket race past us at 79 mph as we rode  in my Grandma's 1955 Buick Roadmaster between Dallas and
Waxahachie, TX in the early 1960's  . Oh, what fine slides these are. THANKS. --Kelly

Thanks for posting the shots of the"Afternoon Hiawatha" and the Rocket at Milwaukee Depot, Minneapolis.
I especially like the photo with the City Hall clock tower.  When I would ride the afternoon "Hi", I would
always watch that clock, and at precisely 12:15, the train would start to move.  Thanks again, Marty!
Taking a look at the second photo, that clock shows 12:00 straight up.
