Nostalgia & History > Locomotive 'nicknames' ... how many out there?Date: 01/22/19 04:14 Locomotive 'nicknames' ... how many out there? Author: valmont My previous post of the Santa Fe 'Snoot' got me thinking of the many locomotive 'nicknames ... which do you remember? Here are 3 to start with, seem to match the locos pretty well ...
1. 'Shark' ............ Detroit (?) June 1962 ............. by Dave Ingles 2. 'Centipede' ..... East Juniata Yard no date .... by Bill Volkmer, 3. 'Baby Face' ... Scranton, PA Jan. 1961......... by Bill Volkmer all from Alan Miller Collection Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/22/19 04:17 by valmont. Cheers, Jim Date: 01/22/19 05:20 Re: Locomotive 'nicknames' ... how many out there? Author: march_hare Well, there’s always “toasters” for the folks that dislike GEs. Haven’t heard that one much lately, suspect it’s because they now make a pretty good engine. Back in the “U-boat” days, not so much.
I’ve heard “hefalumps” used by both fans and crews for things like Katy’s RS3s with EMD long hoods, and MARC’s grafting of F45 cabs onto GP40 bodies. Did anybody in Chicagoland come up with a good tag for the Crandall E-unit? That is the least attractive thing I’ve ever seen on wheels that hadn’t been through a major collision. Date: 01/22/19 07:13 Re: Locomotive 'nicknames' ... how many out there? Author: CPR_4000 I read somewhere that somebody (on the Rock Island? Missouri Pacific?) called BL2's "'hermaphrodites" or 'murphrodites' in the local dialect.
