Santa Fe in the Tehachapis mid 1980's

On one of my few trips south I got this shot using my 4x5 field camera using color negative film. The late afternoon shadows were just creeping in.

Look at how many Santa Fe boxcars is on that train.  It looks like a company picture.  Nicely done.

My guess is that those ATSF boxes have mostly wine from the San Joaquin Valley going to Kansas City and beyond.  To this day that is a big market for the BNSF.

Might have been those Bx-166 or Bx-177 box cars which were offered in Ho model form by BLMA/Atlas

Nice shot! Looking through my Santa Fe timebooks ('78 ~ '87) I caught a "963" train out of Wellington on a number of occasions. As a boxcar-heavy manifest, it always had good power on it. So I'm thinking Bob's shot captured some version of my 963...

That 4x5 makes them jump off the page. The area you took that was one of my absolute favorite spots on Tehachapi! Beautiful image!!
