They called him "The Guv"...

Here's a picture of Bill Dermody, the pile driver operator who built many bridges on the Union Pacific. This must have been about 1954.

Cool shot! A railroader posing for a picture in his element. Classic. The safety-minded casual observer might say this is a dangerous spot for a portrait. But take a closer look at Bill's left hand: FIRMLY gripping the grab-iron. This well-seasoned railroader has been "around the block" many times...

I wonder if he had any hearing problems later in life?

He passed away in 1973 when I was 15 years old. He might have been slightly hard of hearing.
