SP 'Kodachromes' lead the Coast Starlight - January 1986
Author: spdaylight

In one of our many stays at the Miramar Hotel in Montecito (Santa Barbara), some PV's (in this case SP PV's) would return to San Francisco the day after the Rose Bowl game on New Years.  This was unique as two SP 'Kodachromes' were on the head end of the Starlight.

Fantastic, did you ever get to stay in those rooms next to the tracks?

Always   . . in the units on the water we would stay in two rooms (one with the kitchen) right next to the crossing so when the crossing bells would ring our kids (and dad!) would open the door and go out and watch the trains go by.  Back then, there were multiple freights a day.  Will dig out some more clips in the next few weeks.

Well, you can do it all over again, albeit with contemporary equipment:  The “Rosewood Miramar Beach” Hotel has reopened, after a complete rebuild.  The tracks still run right through it!  https://view.contact-client.com/Addons.mvc/Addons/ViewInBrowser?v=Yakntv7JwE%2bcaXtkzQ2sGfMfqXZmbYeAmOCy0neOIicTsDj43e9RBDiTKBIBQltzbvAHaPhGU9k%3d

That place was the best!   Trains on one side of the room and the beach and sand on the other.   Room service, biking, 4th of July fireworks, and their swimming pool all made for great summer trips.

Plan to go back there but the BIG difference is one night will now cost the same as a week back then!

Nice catch! Plus I was amused by the short honk honks of the horn at beginning, nice of the Hogger to do that.

Thanks for posting two of my three favorite units of all time that I ran on the SP. My other favorite unit was the 7602. The 7602 is the only unit still in operation the 3200s have been scrapped.

I was lucky enough to have the 3207 and 3201 when I ran the adopt a branch special from Los Angeles to Surf and back on January 26, 1987. Just seems like yesterday.
