Nostalgia & History > Landmark at Livingston, MTDate: 02/02/19 09:02 Landmark at Livingston, MT Author: santafe199 If you’ve ever railfanned in or through Livingston, Montana you cannot possibly have missed this iconic scene. This elevator sits directly across the tracks from MRL’s main shops complex. And it sits right next to the main drag called Park St, which also doubles as the I-90 business loop through town. Despite a few word-of-mouth attempts in those days to garner any history, I still know nothing about “Teslow Inc”. I did notice that their sign painter was careful not to place the word Hay before Seed, probably for obvious reasons…
1. MRL trackside scene at Livingston, MT in July of 1994 taken while picking up power at the shops. Considering the lay of the town we’re looking almost due east. Thanks for looking back! I'm about half shocked you haven't found a BB shot of this elevator in his collection. Maybe "that slide" is there and you just haven't run across it yet... In the early 90s (?) Livingston is the very place, and the only time I ever met Bruce. I was on a train stopped on the west long lead. We were waiting for another train coming down the pass. With dust & gravel flying Bruce came roaring up to a rattle-t-bang stop and jumped out of his "fine ride" to shoot some pics. I crawled down and chatted with him for a few minutes. Turns out we had a couple of mutual friends. After our quick chat he roared off in search of more railfanning prey. After that one & only meeting I can say without reservation that "...they just don't make 'em like Bruce anymore..." I could not easily find a listing, but the Teslow collection included elevators at Three Forks, MT, and Wilsall, MT in addition to the one at Livingston. Current Google Streetviews show both of those still standing. Thanks for the info! And your mentioning Wilsall hits a bull's-eye for me. In 2010 in the process of getting retired and making preparations to move back home to Kansas I remembered a framed photograph of the elevators at Wilsall I had recently seen hanging in a gallery down in Red Lodge. I made a special trip back down there from Laurel to purchase it. It was taken by a professional photographer named Dave Rennie. It's really hard to tell whether it's a perfectly detailed painting or a well-edited photo. But it is indeed the latter, and it is a gorgeous composition! I'm proud to have it hanging on my wall...
