Nostalgia & History > Double-track tunnels: ever timber lined?Date: 02/10/19 13:38 Double-track tunnels: ever timber lined? Author: timz Do we know of any tunnel with two or more tracks
that was timber lined, as lots of single-track tunnels were? (Evan mentioned the SFe tunnel at Richmond-- his pics show it was double track, so was it timber lined?) Author: Evan_Werkema You might enjoy browsing back issues of "This Point...in Time," the newsletter of the Point Richmond History Association. They have a bunch of them online - scroll down their homepage to find them:
https://pointrichmondhistory.org/ Regarding the lining of Tunnel 5, have a look at Vol. XXVI, No. 5, pages 14 and 15, which has photos showing the west portals of both the rail and road tunnels through Nickols Knob back when the rail tunnel was double-track. The rail tunnel sure looks timber-lined to me: https://pointrichmondhistory.org/newsletters/XXVI-5.pdf Date: 02/10/19 15:45 Re: Double-track tunnels: ever timber lined? Author: timz Thanks for that.
Lots of wood around the portal-- so how do we get the arch shape, looking thru the tunnel? Date: 02/11/19 08:59 Re: Double-track tunnels: ever timber lined? Author: SN711 The Arch shape came about during the 1955 rebuild of Tunnel #5.
Very neat location for a tunnel. Gary Posted from iPhone Date: 02/11/19 10:20 Re: Double-track tunnels: ever timber lined? Author: timz In Evan's pics in the other thread, looking thru the new tunnel, its roof seems to be semicircular.
