Chinese Red, Flatirons and a 'wind cloud'
Author: valmont

A trio of Chinese Red (CB&Q & C&S) locos heading south on the C&S in Boulder, CO with the Flatirons and a lenticular cloud as a backdrop. The hoppers most likely coming from the Sunrise, WY mines and heading to CF&I steel mill in Pueblo, CO.

I'd call that cloud shape an'X-3' cloud.

They were neighbors of sorts, no?

Not so much in Guernsey or the Sunrise mine area. Was it common to have RI hopper cars out there? Maybe common in the Pueblo area and they just became part of the pool of cars for Iron Ore? That's the question, enquiring minds want to know. Good excuse to sell a few more model hopper cars.

The Q car is a ballast car, the Rock car is an old coal car. Looks like it might be a sugar beet train.

Not quite lenticular. They look like circular spaceship clouds. These are clouds being stretched by a strong jet

Speaking of a 'strong jet' here's one .... Douglas X-3 Stiletto, as referred to by Ray_Murphy earlier in this post. Also lenticular clouds have been photographed many times over Boulder and a web search will turn up quite a few examples that show what 'WAF' was referring to.

If the train was very long it would have been blocking Valmont's namesake street. Would cause a major traffic problem today; not so much back in the late '60s, early '70s. The C&S/BN/BNSF line is still there, everything else is greatly changed.

Almost looks like the train is heading for those other railcars ahead crossing at 90°?
Hope they don't collide!!! :-)
