Super photo, so cool! Those 5300s were sweet engines!

What did SP bring out of there during this time in these boxcars!

The SD39s were the preferred power in the later years, shot is looking North at Searles Junction on
the 5309. I don't remember exactly what was in the box cars but memory is that they were tied in with
PMT (Pacific Motor Trucking) as a freight forwarder.

Never caught any 5300's up there, but did manage a few GP-9's.  5312 was my favorite SD39 as you know it was coming with the off key squeeler horn.

I vote to put that line back in. Extend it to Bishop. Electrify from Mojave, run connecting passenger to Bishop for skiing, and other sports. Mine the heck out of the area, steal the water back, and farm the valley, ship it out by rail.

I never rode that line. With almost 700 miles of main line railroad to learn, there just wasn't time to spend a couple of days on the Lone Pine. Every train got an order at Mojave about weather conditions with potential local storms and flooding, inquire locally about conditions. I was told that when sticking out an order at Lone Pine, send slow. Communication had been telegraph until some recent time (recent to 1972). When the dispatcher phone was put in the depot, it was a wall-mounted phone. The operator had to hold the orders up on the wall next to the phone to copy. That was the reason for the rubber stamp weather order at Mojave.
