With a name given this model by the NP, here's Southern Pacific's version of a Yellowstone on March 23, 1940 @ El Paso, TX  .... note the striped pilot.

I've always kind of wondered why the SP's cab forwards were not named "Yellowstones."  After all, it is a 2-8-8-4 isn't it?  Okay, so the locomotive is
turned ninety degress from the tender, it's still a 2-8-8-4!  (LOL)

Just a few thoughts:

1) Did the the NP employees, i.e. engine crews, refer to their 2-8-8-4s as "Yellowstones"?

2) Did The DM&IR employees, i.e. the engine crews, refer to their 2-8-8-4s as "Yellowstones"?

3) Did the UP employees, i.e. the engine crews, refer to their 4000 class 4-8-8-4s as "Big Boys"?

4) Did the C&O employees, i.e. the engine crews, refer to their 1600 class 2-6-6-6s as "Alleghenies"?

5) Did the UP employees, i.e. the engine crews, refer to their 3900 class 4-6-6-4s as "Challengers?

Lead trucks are different from trailing trucks. The function are sufficently different that for the cab-in-front (SP Bulletin 9-1939) the lead trucks are a unique design to both lead the locomotive and hold the weight of the firebox.
