OTD: AMTK E8 & SFZ 1974 + as BN E8

Here are 2 pics, both taken on the same day ... Mar. 24, 1974, by 2 of my local pals. Pic 1 is by John Tudek @ Denver and Pic 2 is by Bruce Black @ Milepost 530, which would be at about Irondale just north of Denver. Amtrak #337 was x-CB&Q #9942A, then became BN #9942 before it was Amtrak #337.

Pic 3 is @ Denver while still BN.

Bruce labeled his shot as the SFZ, this was during the time that the SFZ operated north from Denver over the UP and on through Wyoming.

That’s classic early Amtrak! I think those E’s look nice in the BN green scheme. Good stuff!

Nice shots!! Old UP RR Denver based passenger train crews wored to and from Green River, WY. Denver, CO engine crews worked to and from Rawlins, WY.

Those would have been UP crews, no?  I’m kind of surprised in that era that a passenger crew would run all the way from Denver to Green River...seems more likely they would change at Cheyenne.

Also, are we sure the train is on the UP and not the Burlington, which also approaches Denver from the northeast.  Non UP power and domes other than the ex-SP 3/4 length cars would have been very unusual on the UP in the pre-SDP40F era.

Pic 2 is on the Q -- dunno if the train
is eastward or westward. Aside from the
Q milepost, and the BN lead unit, the train
would be backwards if it were on UP.

Correct, MP 530 is on the Q, my OP was confusing since I added the route change that had occurred beyond Denver, but this part of the route didn't change

Its No 5 and the SP dome, if available, would have been added at Denver and those dome coaches taken off

#5 has a chessie dome that was ok on the SP, probably one of the  three sleepers built for  the C&O,  most likely a slumbercoach was on there that would be pulled along with the regular dome, with the chessie dome up front, i wonder if it may have been the slumbercoach for today.   the 1st pic is the power turning at the washrack after 5 departed on the UP perhaps to be readied to be #6 in a few hours .  Love the 9942 progression, thank you

pic 1 shows the power turning at the washrack to head 6, with the 2 UP units  back tonight?  chessie dome sleeper can go to oakland!   UP engr , fireman and conductor would run den-chian -den in the late seventies, if 5 was on time.

May I add something?  Well, I will anyway.  

9942 was painted for merger day and was one of the few, maybe only I can't remember, Q E units to get the full BN scheme as there were issues with the paint adhering to stainless steel.  
The third photo shows the early effects of this while the first two show the eventual result.  This is what led BN to severely modify their paint scheme for the E's.

Chessie Moonlight sleepers were used as lounge cars on 5/6 west of Denver while the SP dome lounges were being worked on

I don't know that there were many either but here's one by George Horna from Aug. 1973, no location, maybe only 2?

also amtrak had one x grande/chessie coach i saw on the SFZ
