Date: 04/15/19 07:51 Re: Monday Memory - GM&O 100A Author: elueck 100A was an E-8M, rebuilt from what was originally B&O EA #52. The locomotive was transferred to the Alton to haul the Abraham Lincoln, and renumbered 50. After the Alton's E-7s arrived after the way, the locomotive was used as a trailing unit, but was sent to EMD for "rebuilding" into a 2000 HP E-8 to match up with the rest of the then GM&O E-7 roster. Growing up, it was my favorite of all of the GM&O E units, but was almost always used as a trailing unit, usually behind E-7 #100 (which itself was bought as a lead unit for the old EA unit).

This train, and its counterpart the Abraham Lincoln, brought GM&O power
to Milwaukee and Milwaukee Road power to St. Louis. These trains ran for 2 years from November 1971 to November 1973, when they were replaced by Turboliners. A real treat.
Course we rode Chicago to Milwaukee on the Empire Builder when we spotted one of the GN 1290 large window observation cars. Oh those early days of Amtrak did have its hi points. |
