Uncle Joe Date: 05/16/19 13:47 Re: horseshoe curve 1977 Author: tq-07fan You are so right about the Curve getting really cold at night! My dad and stopped there in the early evening in July 1989. It was still OK warm in the parking lot so we went up with just T-shirts and possibly even shorts. We kept on watching and as it got dark it started getting cold. Another family and several other fans decided to tough it out to see the Westbound Broadway Limited come by, which was scheduled after nine. An Eastbound freight was approaching the curve when we saw the flashing strobe lights of the Broadway. Another kid and I ran to the east side of the park to see and wave at the Broadway just in time before the stupid freight blocked it completely from view. At least the engineer blew the horn. Everyone was bummed out that we had all froze our arses off as a group just to see the Broadway Limited, only have the freight block the view. That was our only visit to Horseshoe Curve.

Date: 05/16/19 18:30 Re: horseshoe curve 1977 Author: RuleG I always thought that the eastbound Broadway Limited rounded the Horseshoe Curve before the National Limited. Therefore, I assumed that the Broadway shown in your photo was running very late (a common occurance during the Penn Central and early Conrail eras). However Amtrak's National Timetable dated June 1977 shows the eastbound National Limited arriving Altoona at 7:27 am and the Broadway Limited arriving at 9:44 am.
