Nostalgia & History > SP's SD39'sDate: 05/20/19 10:22 SP's SD39's Author: trackplanner Class unit SP 5300 idles with an SD45 on the Day & Night spur while a mainline freight makes a setout at City of Industry, CA in October 1977. These units were regulars on the various LA Basin Haulers and often run in solid sets for a real ground shaking thrill to experience (Don DeLay photo).

type of locomotive horn on each of the 5300 class units assigned down there. As I recall, he had M5 horns on 5300 to 5302. Added interest to watching trains there during that time period. I don't imagine they found much favor on the UP, how many still exist somewhere?
James Nelson Thornton, CO www.flickr.com/mojaveflyer Date: 05/20/19 11:50 Re: SP's SD39's Author: JimBaker I thought the Day & Night Spur was between Arcadia and Glendora bypassing the Ol PE Line.
Where did this spur go to here in C of I? James R.(Jim) Baker Whittier, CA Date: 05/20/19 12:04 Re: SP's SD39's Author: ExSPCondr Directly across the bridge that is right in front of the 5300 and across the river into the new Day and Night factory. The SP paid for Day and Night to move from Duarte so they could remove the whole branch, as D&N was the last customer. The spur goes right through D&N and out onto the UP which calls it Carrier.
There is considerable discussion on this about 3 weeks ago here under I believe the title of "Arcadia." The post is on 4/18, "More Arcadia from Bob Melbo." G Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/20/19 12:45 by ExSPCondr. Date: 05/20/19 12:06 Re: SP's SD39's Author: UPNW2-1083 JimBaker Wrote:

Here's a shot of the other end of the Day and Night spur where it crossed over the San Jose Creek (flood channel) at City of Industry. It headed due south out of the yard, crossed the creek and Arenth St. and went into the plant. My shot from January 1978. The bridge is still there but the track has been removed.-BMT Date: 05/20/19 12:43 Re: SP's SD39's Author: JimBaker Ahhh!! OK, This is the new Day & Night Spur.
I wasn't aware of that location. Thanks, Jim B. James R.(Jim) Baker Whittier, CA Date: 05/20/19 12:56 Re: SP's SD39's Author: ExSPCondr Another little piece of trivia: Arenth Ave, right on the other side of the bridge, mentioned in a post above, was named for the SP's Traffic Manager, V. L. Arenth who retired about 1961.

That was a great place for afternoon nose shots, usually something always parked there. Unusual that 5002 didn't have a nose number....

SSW GP30 #5002 lacks the usual road number application on the nose due to being involved in the head-on wreck in April 1973 at Tyler Ave. in El Monte, CA. The 5002 was a trailing unit on the eastbound train involved in the wreck. It returned to LA-Taylor Roundhouse for repairs and was eventually returned to service. What you see in Brian's great photo on the Day & Night spur in City of Industry are the results of those repairs. A pair of them can be found in ITSX marks working for the contract switch crew at BNSF's Alliance Intermodal Facility in Fort Worth, Texas. They are usually joined by several ITSX SD45T-2s. I don't see a nose number on the GP35 behind it either. I've also included a shot of the 7605 at Pepper in March 1976 with no nose number. Was this something they were doing with SSW units in the mid 70's? Sorry, Don, didn't mean to hijack your thread.-BMT Date: 05/21/19 09:04 Re: SP's SD39's Author: alcoc636 Don, Brian, others,
By this time, SP was putting the giant block "SP" on the nose of hood units. But that just wouldn't work for SSW (Cotton Belt) units, so they kept on with the number on the nose, as well as down on the pilot with "SSW" on one side and the unit number on the other. This is just speculation (a guess really, but an educated guess) but when a Cotton Belt unit made it to an SP roundhouse, like Taylor in Los Angeles and with regard to the number on the nose, the SP guys just didn't know what to do. They couldn't put the block "SP" on there. That wouldn't look right, SP on an SSW unit. But they couldn't put the number on there because that was no longer the standard. So they opted for blank. Tim Dickinson La Verne, CA Date: 05/21/19 09:13 Re: SP's SD39's Author: trackplanner No problem Brian, always enjoy seeing your great photos! Never paid a lot of attention to SSW units, but you could be right that they didn't start numbering the noses until later years, maybe when SP went to the nose lettering?
Tim, I went to that wreck site with my dad right after it happened, ugly scene! I took photos with an Instamatic camera but lost them somewhere over the years. Not a big fan of train wrecks, but that one and Duffy St. really stick out in my mind to this day. Didn't go to see the Sunset wreck in Bassett but heard it from a Los Altos football game a few miles away. Had photos from a railroader, but sold them to Dick Curts. Out Date: 05/21/19 19:50 Re: SP's SD39's Author: SanJoaquinEngr I remember when these units were new. They spent their earlier life on the LA -Bakersfield -West Colton freight pool. These units worked well on the hard pull and had great dynamic brakes. The big drawback was in run 8 the units were deafening.

That's what made them so great, lol! I used to drive the RTD Line 484 on Valley Blvd back in the 1980's. If I saw an eastbound Hauler with a set of these on the point leaving COI, I'd drag my schedule to stay with him all the way to the Brea Cutoff with bus windows rattling all the way! Good times indeed.... |
