Montana Monday: in the hole at Drummond
Author: santafe199

This is no longer the “fireman’s” view from a locomotive cab. In the brave new world of modern crew consist agreements (ca 1987) this is the assistant engineer’s view from the cab of former BN 6337. I am that assistant engineer, although it will be 2 more years before I will complete upstart Montana Rail Link’s locomotive engineer training program and take promotion.

The SD40 I’m riding in is still painted in BN Cascade Green, but now belongs to MRL. I’m working train ML (Missoula ~ Laurel), a mainline local that will change crews in Helena. At the throttle is my partner, former MILW hogger R. T. “Ted” Lane. We’ve taken the siding at Drummond, but were still rolling down to the east end when this westbound showed up. That’s parallel Interstate 90 over on the left…

1. LMX 8594 leads a westbound manifest (tr 195?) at Drummond, MT on April 27, 1988.
Train consist: 6337, 1929 & 6320 (all former BN) with 35 loads, 44 empties & 4485 tons.

Thanks for looking back!

You don't see a lot of pictures of that original LMX scheme.  Thanks for sharing this moment.

Hard to find an uglier locomotive.

I cringe every time I see one of those LMX units.

I learned to cringe very quickly whenever I found out I was getting one on the point. Over-powered, gut-jarring pieces of $#!+.......

But at least they were ugly...

Neat photo despite the LMX.  For several years those were about all we saw here in Tulsa--I think all the green locos were on other parts of the system.
