Another Sacramento Northern Ry in Oakland Photo
Author: MartyBernard

The back side of this photo from Ken Shattock says, "SN 660 switching in the tiny yard at 40th and Shafter, Oakland, CA 10/30/48."

This was taken the same day as the Sacramento Northern photo I posted yesterday.  The motor and caboose are the same.  John C. Illman photographer.

Having the word caboose on the caboose seems a little weird.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

An absolute gem. That is a fascinating multi-sided building behind the locomotive.

There are Soooo many interesting details in that overhead and the pan on the steeple-cab, I don;t know where to begin.....     Wow!

It would appear that an original overhead for "trollys" was modified for pans.

BTW, is that a caboose?   ( GDRVVF )

There's a really interesting segment in one of the Charles Smiley Videos showing them putting a train together at the yard and then running up the hill, then more footage around Walnut Creek and over to the car ferry. Amazing what had been there and how difficult it is to find anymore.

Marty, First off, a big thanks for taking on the project of posting/reposting photos from KRK's great collection, he was a huge asset to the TO community....as were the works of the other collections you've shared here.

On to that caboose......I wonder of SN was following the practice of many roads' pssenger fleets....labelling cars as to their function......such as coach, dining car, etc  That said I've never seen that practice applied to freight equipment.

Such an interesting photo, sure glad you are posting KRK’s stuff here. He had such a wealth of knowledge and connection to the Bay Area, I miss his posts.

Is there anything left from this photo?

The bldg at the L edge of the pic is still on the south side of 40th St.

Behind the caboose is a glimpse of the shops, down a narrow “canyon” of buildings. They packed a lot into a very tight area.

Thanks for posting KRK’s gifts to you, Marty.

Per ICC (Predecessor to FRA) regs Two to Four alpha characters are necessary and sufficient.

Add me to the list of those who really miss the old lug.  I visited him in Tacoma in his last year of life.....physically, he was a mess, having survived a serious medical emergency not long before.  That said, he was as full of life as ever, and he was excited to show of some of his treasures there at his home.  Deadbeat that he was, he died owing me a steak dinner from a bet he lost......yes, I actually bested him....at least that one time!
RIP, KRK.
