What a great shot!   Where does the spur lead to?

A caboose on the head end?  I thought they might be pushers, but the crewman is facing the camera...

Love those 30's!
On the Southern, were they built "long hood forward"?   Just curious because of the way the helper set is coupled together with the short hoods facing one another.

   I  Thought both Southern's and N&W's were set up " long hood forward  ?

Pretty sure the SR GP30's had the F on the short hood end, but if they had dual controls that really didn't matter.

All Southern GP units with 567 prime movers, except ex NS GP18's, were set up short hood forward.  For some reason, the Southern had the fleet of seventeen GP18 units acquired from the NS set up for long hood forward operation during their initial major overhauls. 
Similarly, all Southern SD units with 567 prime movers were set up short hood forward, no exceptions.
Unlike N&W, none of Southerns GP and SD units with 567 prime movers were equipped with dual controls.
Hope this helps to clariify the matter.
Thus, the lead unit in Bob's photo was operating rear forward and front to front with the trailing unit.
Summer haze is all too frequent in the southern Indiana area.

I'm curious about that too.   I couldn't match the location up with anything on Google Earth, unless it is further out of Huntingburg than I looked.
