After finding the 3985 photos I posted earlier this morning, I found a few more photos I had taken in the early 90's of UP's Upland Jct. about 4 miles east of Marysville, KS.  The cool part about Upland, is it's located on UP's Gibbon Cutoff and at that time there was around 110 trains a day rolling through there.  With mostly coal trains from the Powder River Basin.  I was only around 14 or 15 years old when I took these pictures so, they are not the best quality.  My family's farm was a mile and half to the north so, it was very easy for me to drive down and sit for hours and watch the parade of trains go by.  The train crews never bothered me and after awhile they knew my dad's old pick-up.

Photo 1.  A westbound coal train is waiting on the Springcreek bridge for an eastbound freight.  Btw, there's my mode of transportation in the foreground in the picture.  The track you also see in the foreground is the old St. Joe branch UP sold to the Northeast Kansas and Nebraska Railroad.

In the early 90s, UP doubletracked their mainline from Upland east to Frankfort, KS.

Photo 5. Westbound freight with the only CSX SD40-2 I ever shot.  Along with an ex-MOP B unit SD40-2.

The piggyback train was waiting for a pair of eastbound coaltrains. 

Photos 10 and 11.  An eastbound Jeffery Energy coal train with a Dash 8 and a pair of Oakway SD60s.

Photo 12. Another eastbound coal train followed the Jeffery's train with a brand new SD90MAC and AC4400CW on the point.

I know I have a few photos of Upland Jct. before the doubletrack and it looked very different.  If I can find them, I will post them.

My grand-dad got his start as a telegrapher for UP at Upland Kansas in the late 1920's. The other notable item about Upland is a boiler explosion on a UP9000 4-12-2 that occurred there during the steam era.

UP 9018, to be exact. wag216

All the old timers who ran steam out of Marysville would always talk about 9018 blowing up at Upland.
