C’mon UP, bring back the E’s
Author: oyw

I’ve chased a lot of UP specials with a variety of power over the last thirty-some years, but without question their A-B-A set of E’s are my favorite. I recently found this slide taken at West Palm Springs, CA, dated October 18, 1998 of a 10 car deadhead passenger move with UP 949 leading. For the life of me, I can’t remember the reason for them being out west but soon after, the Union Pacific lettering spelled out on the nose would be gone. Then, by 2004 the nose doors were completely removed for safety concerns. The Commemorative units are nice but I would sure like to see the E’s again.

I always enjoyed working the excursion trips with the E's. And I was glad I convinced Steve not to turbo charge the prime movers to keep that awesome distinct sound.
I too wish they were out and about these days but currently they are landlocked in and around the roundhouse. When the company did the contaminated site cleanup around the turntable they didn't put all the whisker tracks to the roundhouse back in.

So, Bob, is the 3985 also land-locked in that last stall of the roundhouse?

I have slides of this train in San Timoteo Canyon but not at WPS. Pretty sure we were in separate vehicles this time unlike a bunch of other chases. I was late getting out...saw the headlight while waiting at Banning.

Yep I believe so Jack. I think only the first two stalls got their whisker tracks replaced. The rest are just sitting on the ground not connected.

Can never have too many UP E and F units.

Beautiful shot.  As they should look, minus the ditch light(s).
