Holly Sugar Alco S6 At Hamilton City

I took this image on September 15, 1999 as they brought the engine out of the plant to assist in switching out some cars that California Northern had brought into town.

That engines needs to be saved, provided it has not been vandalized already.

The S6 at Hamilton City disappeared several years ago. Nobody seems to know what it's disposition was.

There is still an S6 at Foster Farms in Delhi, CA. It works and was used until late last summer when they brought in a trackmobile. Since then the S6 has just sat there intact but unused. Wonder how long it is going to last...

It would be nice to preserve every old locomotive just because it's an old locomotive, but unfortunately, it's hard enough to get the dollars and hands to properly preserve the stuff we've already saved, let alone care for new acquisitions.  There are already a number of preserved ex-SP S6's (Fillmore & Western, Niles Canyon, even one in Green Bay, WI), so losing this unit wouldn't mean extinction for the type.  Switchers in general tend to be over-preserved in the US - our railroad museums are packed to the gills with them.  If someone wants to put up their own money and labor to save this unit, that's their call, but for history's sake, we ought to think twice before scrambling to save yet another yard goat while various types of road power, particularly 6-axle road power, really, genuinely do run the risk of going extinct.

To coach, the reefers were used to load cheese out of a dairy in the Orland area, Ham City had a large cold storage
facility which was ideal for the cheese loading. Since those days a similar facility came into use on the South side of
Orland. And to Evan, that's all true but where did the Ham City S6 end up? Cut up? Saved?

Graybeard1942 reported it scrapped ca.2015 in this old thread:

It had a terminal case of PB. (plain bearings).

A lot of 1st generation locomotives succumb to this.
